Crop Walk Tradition Persists

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a wrench in many events, St. Luke’s Society, the school’s largest service club, adapted to new guidelines and hosted the annual Crop Walk on campus on Sunday, November 1. Originally scheduled for October 18, the Crop Walk was delayed by two weeks due to four positive COVID-19 tests and the immediate school-wide quarantine.

“Each of you with every interaction has the power to tell somebody who they are. You have the power to tell somebody you think they’re a sinner, the power to tell somebody, just with your face, with your interaction, you think them a monster, or not,” said John Amaechi, psychologist, author, and ex-NBA star who identifies as gay, when he addressed the community last Wednesday, October 28. Amaechi’s speech marked the end of programs recognizing this year’s LGBT History Month.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry Honors the Growing Power of Women in Sciences

Only 57 women have been awarded a Nobel Prize out of more than 900 recipients.

This year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry was, for the first time, awarded to an exclusively all-female team for their remarkable contributions to the human race. The awardees were Dr. Emmanuelle Charpentier, director of the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens, and Dr. Jennifer Doudna from the University of California, Berkeley.

Varsity Football Focuses on Fundamentals

After a bounce-back season last year, the Boys Varsity Football faced a challenge this fall. Due to COVID-19-related restrictions, especially on high-contact sports such as football, the team held modified practices. “It was unlike anything we have ever experienced,” said Head Coach Danny Smith. “I have been completely amazed and stunned by how well the kids have adjusted and have been optimistic, energetic, and supportive of each other.”

Mountain Biking Embraces Campus Trails

While many teams experienced major restrictions due to COVID-19 protocols, the Co-ed Varsity Mountain Biking team proceeded with minimal changes to its routines and practices. As a naturally socially-distanced sport, safety precautions like restricting close contact had no bearing on the team.
