Welcome to the first issue of The Record for this school year! COVID-19 has brought significant change to our everyday lives at school, and The Record is no exception. But just like how students, faculty,
and other members of the community have adapted, The Record is committed to continuing our mission of elevating the voices of everyone through sharing stories with the community. We invite you to join our meeting
at 7:30 p.m. EDT tonight to learn more about our plans for this year and how you can contribute.

“I have three brothers, I can ride a unicycle, and I’ve been to 49 out of the 50 states.”
This is just one of the many creative submissions new students posted while played “Two Truths and a Lie” on Zoom during
orientation last week. With ten percent of the student body studying remotely, the school held separate orientation sessions for new remote, boarding, and day students.

“Tough on China”: Clash of Civilizations or Political Tool?

Michael Zhang ’21, Opinions Editor

As November approaches, all eyes are on the United States presidential election - more specifically, how Democratic nominee Joe Biden and President Trump will address the novel Coronavirus. COVID-19 has both broken and
widened existing fissures within American society. While most of our economy lies in shambles, the nation’s wealthiest corporations - Amazon, Google, and Apple - enjoy growth. Mental illness and suicide rates have skyrocketed.
The disproportionate suffering of Blacks and Hispanics as well as widespread acts of police brutality underscore entrenched racial discrimination. America is hurting.

After the Garland residents finish spending the two-week quarantine playing golf on the seventh fairway, they could find themselves on the athletic field, exploring the school’s trails, or participating in the Math Team
as their fall season co-curricular.
The 2020-2021 school year has arrived with many changes, and the fall co-curricular program is also affected by COVID-19 restrictions. Students can choose from 36 interscholastic
teams, intramural activities, outdoor programs, and alternative team options this fall, more than ever before.
