February 8, 2019

Candidates running in the 2020 Presidential election are beginning to formally announce their campaigns. So far, eight candidates have launched exploratory committees, but there is a lot of speculation about other potential candidates who may join the race, including Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, and John Hickenlooper.

Senator Kamala Harris of California announced her decision to run during an interview on ABC News. On Sunday, January 29, Harris held a rally outside of Oakland City Hall to describe her plans for the election. Harris was the former attorney general of California and is the first South Asian-American senator in United States history.

Elizabeth Warren, a two-term senator from Massachusetts, announced that she would “take a hard look” at launching a campaign bid in late September. Warren previously taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard law schools. Warren has already focused on issues like decreasing income inequality and political corruption.

Highlights from Superbowl LIII

On a partly cloudy Sunday with mild temperatures in downtown Atlanta, the upstart Los Angeles Rams prepared to challenge the perennial favorites, the New England Patriots. Super Bowl LII would be played inside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the brand-new home of the Atlanta Falcons. New England prepared for its ninth title game under the legendary quarterback-coach duo of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.  The Rams geared up for the big game just two years after a disastrous 4-12 season in St. Louis, before the team revamped its roster and moved to L.A. Both teams had difficulties reaching Atlanta; the Patriots had faced off against the red-hot Chiefs in the AFC Championship and won the game with some Brady magic in overtime while the Rams were only able to close out the championship game against the Drew-Brees-led Saints due to some luckily missed pass-interference call by the officials. Thus, one would assume that two crazy overtime thrillers in the semi-final matches would surely lead to an exciting Super Bowl! Instead, audiences were treated to what might be the worst Super Bowl in NFL history.

The Best Ads of the 2019 Superbowl

February 8, 2019

As a whole, the 53rd Super Bowl left something to be desired. While the game was uneventful as the lowest scoring Superbowl of all time, with an especially lackluster first half lacking in much coordinated offensive play, the half-time show wasn’t outstanding either.

The performances by Maroon 5, Travis Scott and Big Boi were fine, if not a little bland - but ultimately uninspiring. More importantly, they were overshadowed by the enormous expectations of “Sweet Victory”, a song featured on Spongebob Squarepants in the revered episode “Band Geeks” from  2001. In a manner fitting the overall tone of the rest of the night, fans were left disappointed as “Sweet Victory” was teased, but quickly replaced by “Sicko Mode.” Oddly enough, as if to compensate for the show, many high profile rappers made appearances in ads.
